Youth in Kisumu Trained on Movement Building and Civic Participation

KISUMU, Kenya — Young leaders in Kisumu County have participated in an intensive civic engagement training focused on movement building, collective action, and strengthening citizen participation in governance.

The training, facilitated by Civic Voice, brought together participants from different communities for highly engaging and interactive sessions designed to deepen their understanding of how social and political change is organized and sustained.

Throughout the sessions, participants explored how movements emerge and evolve, and examined the key differences between short-term protests and long-term movement building. Facilitators emphasized that sustainable change requires strategic organization, collective effort, and a clear understanding of how power operates within society.

A central feature of the training was its practical and participatory approach. Participants engaged in group exercises, simulations, and collaborative discussions that encouraged peer learning and active involvement. These activities helped participants better understand how citizens can organize effectively to influence decision-making processes at both local and national levels.

Using analytical tools such as the Spectrum of Allies and the Pillars of Support, the youth worked together to map out community issues, identify key actors, and develop strategies for engagement. These practical lessons enabled participants to connect theory with lived realities in their communities.

The discussions also surfaced key challenges affecting young people, including limited access to identification documents, unemployment, and growing political disengagement. Participants reflected on how these barriers contribute to voter apathy and reduced civic participation.

Despite these challenges, the youth identified critical issues affecting their wards and constituencies, including access to public services, security, gender equality, and economic opportunities. They further explored practical ways of engaging local leaders and institutions to push for accountability and improved service delivery.

Organisers noted that the training aims to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to take an active role in civic life and community organising.

Civic Voice continues to support youth-led initiatives that strengthen democratic participation and promote citizen-driven accountability across communities.
